Each year, Center on Halsted hosts its annual Human First Gala to recognize individuals, businesses and organizations who have contributed to building and strengthening the LGBT community in Chicago. Created because each individual, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, physical ability, ethnicity or age is – above all – human first, the celebration welcomes 1,500 guests each year and has become the largest LGBT-focused gala in Chicago. Guests include corporate and foundation sponsors of the Center, civic and city leaders, local and national elected officials, major donors and supporters, as well as members and allies of the LGBT community. The show features opening remarks from a guest host, an awards presentation and a musical or comedy performance. Past performers include Lily Tomlin, Oleta Adams, Linda Eder and Wanda Sykes. The 2012 Human First event welcomes emcee Andy Cohen, Bravo's, Host of "Watch What Happens Live" with a musical performance by k.d. lang & the Siss Boom Bang.
Human First also offers Center on Halsted and our supporters the opportunity to both reflect on the past year of service and also look to the future, as we continue to build and strengthen the LGBT community. This year the Center is celebrating its First Five years since opening our doors and is honored to recognize a distinguished group of individuals and corporate partners whose support has made Center on Halsted the nation's premier LGBT community center. The 2012 Human First will honor the leadership of Amina Dickerson, Laura Ricketts, Greg Cameron and Richard & Susan Kiphart for their contributions to our shared community. The Community Spirit Awards will be awarded to Chicago Cubs Charities, The Chicago Community Trust and Kraft Foods for their support of LGBT individuals and the unique issues facing our community.
Since opening our doors in June 2007, Center on Halsted has worked to become the most comprehensive LGBT community center in the country through innovative programming, strategic partnerships and extensive advocacy efforts for LGBT individuals. With each passing year, our mission and reach continues to grow as the needs of our community increase.
