A CONVERSATION WITH TRANSGENDER ADVOCATE, DIANE SCHROER (IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ACLU-ILLINOIS)
EVENT DATE
Sunday, November 15, 2009 - 6:00 PM
LOCATION
Center on Halsted
DESCRIPTION
Colonel Schroer was an Airborne Ranger qualified special operations forces officer who received numerous decorations including the Defense Superior Service Medal, and was hand-picked to head up a classified national security operation. She began taking steps to transition from male to female shortly after retiring as a colonel after 25 years of distinguished service in the Army. When she interviewed for a job as a terrorism research analyst at the Library of Congress, she thought she’d found the perfect fit. Schroer accepted the position, but when she told her future supervisor that she was in the process of gender transition, the Library of Congress rescinded the job offer.
In 2005, Diane, represented by the ACLU, filed suit, and in September 2008, after hearing the evidence at trial, a federal judge ruled that the Library discriminated on the basis of sex when it denied Diane this job.
Join us as she shares her personal story of discovering her female gender identity and her decision to transition. She will talk about the challenges of coming out to her friends and family, and discuss the importance of engaging in the political process in a thoughtful and strategic way.
