TOPIC: Society's Views about Sexual Orientation
INSTITUTION: Suffolk University
POSTED: 8/27/10

PARTICIPANTS
Participants must be over the age of 18, and identity with a descriptor of something other than heterosexual—such as lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, or questioning.

WHAT'S INVOLVED
Participation consists of completing a web-based survey that will take about 30 minutes. Participants will be asked questions about themselves and their feelings. Participation in this study will be anonymous. No self-identifying information will be collected, and responses will be encrypted.

BENEFITS/RISKS
There is a minimal risk involved for participants. Subjects may experience distress while answering questions about their current mental health status or sexual orientation. Subjects may stop participation at any time, and they can skip any questions they would prefer not to answer. Referral information for mental health services will be provided at the end of the survey or, whenever subjects choose to discontinue. There may be societal benefits to participation in this research. Increasing the scientific community’s knowledge about sexual orientation will hopefully increase the quality of outreach programming and mental health treatment for LGB individuals. Thus, LGB people who utilize mental health treatment may benefit indirectly.

If you complete the survey, you may enter to win one of two $25 iTunes gift cards.

We want to gain a better understanding of the resilient aspects of romantic relationships for the GLB community in hopes to provide more effective services to GLB individuals. Given that little research has been conducted in this area with GLB individuals, we hope the results of the study will educate people in society regarding love and relationship experiences for GLB people and guide researchers to new areas of study.
