CELEBRATING, SUPPORTING &
UNITING THE LGBT OLDER ADULT COMMUNITY

Center on Halsted provides an array of programs and services for LGBT community members over the age of 55 through our Senior program. Each week, more than 150 seniors visit Center on Halsted's John Baran Senior Center to attend workshops, take classes, share a meal or make new friends.

In addition to our onsite services, the Senior program at Center on Halsted hosts a number of programs throughout Chicagoland. We are also working with Heartland Alliance to create the Midwest's first affordable housing development dedicated for LGBT seniors, to be located next door to Center on Halsted.

If you are interested in learning more, please contact Philonise Keithley at 773.472.6469, ext. 245 or check out our calendar for a list of this month's events.

SENIOR PROGRAM CALENDAR

Programs and Services

Meal Program – Let's do lunch!

We provide lunch and conversation for older adults every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday in the John Baran Senior Center at Center on Halsted, in partnership with the City of Chicago. It's more than just lunch, it's a chance to get to know fellow senior LGBT community members and to find out about other community programs.

Social and Recreational Programs

Theater trips, language classes, parties and more! We host a wide array of programs ranging from intellectual and artistic to recreational and social. Click here for our Center Senior calendar to find the program that's right for you.

Benefits Check-up

SAGE staff will arrange for you to meet with a Benefits Counselor who will help you identify and apply for various benefits programs like Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program. We'll make sure you to help you get signed up for the right programs, on time and in the right way.

Constituent Advocacy Program

Are you interested in becoming an advocate for yourself or other LGBT older adults? Through the Constituent Advocacy program, you will participate in special training seminars and build the skills to become a public advocate for LGBT older adults. You'll have the opportunity to bring awareness to the unique history and needs of the LGBT older adult community.

Friendly Visitor Program

The Friendly Visitor Program provides companionship and friendship to isolated LGBT adults who are homebound or living in a care setting. Through the program, an LGBT older adult is paired with a Friendly Visitor volunteer who provides friendship and support through weekly visits. If you or someone you know would like to receive visits from a Friendly Visitor, please contact our team at 773.472.6469, ext. 445.

Homesharing

Are you looking for companionship, extra income or some help around the house? Do you live in Chicago or the neighboring suburbs? Are you looking for affordable housing?

Homesharing is a housing program that facilitates compatible matches between a renter and home provider. We help match potential applicants through a comprehensive screening process and background check and also provide ongoing support to the home sharing matches – all free of charge. Older Adults Living with HIV

At Center on Halsted, we are at the forefront of HIV and Aging, striving to increase awareness of testing and prevention needs for older adults and advocate for the provision of services to HIV-positive older adults. As part of this work, we provide regular services for LGBT Older Adults living with HIV. For more information about testing and living with HIV as an older adult, visit our HIV/AIDS & STD Services page

In addition, we have partnered with a number of individuals and organizations to better educate the general public and policymakers on the unique challenges facing LGBT HIV-positive Older Adults. As a part of this ongoing work we have produced a groundbreaking documentary and published a leading research study.

Aging POZitively and Healthy Aging

"Aging POZitively" is a ground-breaking documentary on aging and HIV. Produced by Center on Halsted and directed by Dennis Belogorsky, the film follows three older adults in Chicago living with HIV.  Click here to watch the movie.

Health and Psychological Needs of LGBT Older Adults

To better educate the medical communities and public at large about healthy aging, we published Health and Psychological Needs of LGBT Older Adults, a comprehensive research study in partnership with AIDS Community Research Initiative of America (ACRIA). The study analyzes health needs specific to LGBT Older Adults and includes recommendations for policy makers. You can read the full report here.
