Referrals

Since 1979, the Legal Referral Program has provided members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community with referrals to attorneys specializing in such legal areas as emergency arrests, discrimination, adoption, custody, personal injury, criminal, harassment, contracts, wills, and bankruptcy.

Referrals are made to attorneys who are sensitive to and experienced in matters related to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.

Currently, Center on Halsted offers free, in person, legal referrals every Wednesday night, each month, from 6pm to 8pm by appointment. This is a setting where LGBT people can speak one-on-one with a volunteer lawyer about specific, immediate needs for specific situations and receive appropriate referrals.

Legal Seminars

Center on Halsted is committed to providing legal information to the LGBT community through a regular series of free legal seminars. In the past, seminars have been provided on topics such as landlord tenant disputes, buying a home, and adoption.

Special Events

Throughout the year, Center on Halsted will host or co-host special events for the LGBT legal community. We partnered with Lambda Legal on the February 2007 “Freedom to Marry Reception.” On June 21, 2007, during our Grand Opening month, we presented a special reception for our volunteer lawyers and the LGBT-supportive community.
