Center on Halsted relies on individual giving and corporate sponsorships to support the many programs and services offered to the community. Every year we host a series of marquee events to educate the broader community about our work and to help raise the funds necessary to offer our diverse and successful programs. Through these events we acknowledge the great contributions of our benefactors and our shared work to build and strengthen the LGBTQ community for generations to come.
Each year, Center on Halsted hosts its annual Human First Performance & Gala to recognize the contributions of individuals, businesses and organizations to the LGBTQ community in Chicago. Created because each individual, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic status, physical ability, ethnicity, or age is—above all—Human First; the celebration welcomes 1,500 guests each year and is the largest LGBTQ-focused gala in Chicago. Guests include civic leaders, local, state and federal elected officials, corporate and foundation sponsors, and major donors of the Center, as well as members of the LGBTQ community and its allies. The show features opening remarks from a guest emcee, an awards presentation and a musical or comedy performance. Past performers include Lily Tomlin, Oleta Adams, Linda Eder, Wanda Sykes, Andy Cohen, and k.d. lang & the Siss Boom Bang.
Human First also offers Center on Halsted and our supporters the opportunity to both reflect on the past years of service and also look to the future, as we continue to advance community and secure the health and well-being of the LGBTQ people of Chicagoland.
This year’s Human First Award recipients include Sarah Schmidt & Julie Matthei; and Jonathan Pizer & Brad Lippitz, whose work to advance the marriage equality has been essential to its growing success; and Richard Turner, who has been active in AIDS/HIV and LGBTQ issues as well as with the corporate and philanthropic communities for decades. Being honored with the Community Spirit Award will be Allstate Insurance Company, which has been very supportive of agencies nationwide particularly around the issues of domestic violence and fiscal literacy. Co-chairing this year's event are Charles A. Schrock, Chairman, President and CEO of People Gas’ parent company, Integrys Energy Group and Laura Ricketts, Director, Chicago Cubs and Chairperson of the Board, Chicago Cubs Charities. We are also pleased that Billie Jean King, who has done so much to advance the rights of women both on the court and off, has agreed to serve as honorary Co-Chair along with Maria C. Bechily, Amina Dickerson, Anne L. Kaplan, and Abby O’Neil & Carroll Joynes.Headlining this year’s Human First gala will be singing sensation and Chicago native, Chaka Kahn.
