Group Therapy and Support groups at Center on Halsted are one component of our Mental Health Services. We currently offer on-going therapy groups and time limited therapy groups for individuals working on and making changes in their lives. Additionally, we offer time limited support groups in both the Mental Health and HIV Testing and Prevention departments for individuals seeking support. For a list of current groups, please visit our calendar. Descriptions of all of our groups are listed below.
We provide group sessions which run for 10 weeks and pre-registration is required. To participate in any of our groups, interested parties will need to complete a brief registration with a group facilitator. In this registration process, you will be asked to complete a brief phone screening for support groups or an in-person registration interview for therapy groups & HIV support groups. Participation in HIV support groups is free as they are funded through a grant from the Illinois Department of Public Health. Other Support groups have a $10 fee per session and Therapy groups have a $20 fee per session. Fee negotiation may be available for those who can't afford the full fee.
To register or for more information about an upcoming group, please contact us at 773.472.6469, ext. 483 or mentalhealth@centeronhalsted.org.

The urgency to couple is played out in no larger arena than in the gay community. Particularly among gay men, the stamp of validation many seek is the long-term relationship. However, as reflected to some degree by the divorce rate in America [50%], the notion of permanency in relationships is transitory in the least and elusive at best. However, among middle-aged gay men, where conditions of worth and Generativity vs. Stagnation issues are starting to be examined, it's not uncommon to see a higher incidence of depression and/or other co morbidities attributable to feelings of separation and marginalization. These conditions are highlighted against the backdrop of few to no institutional support systems which affirm gay individuals--much less their relationships.
This support group will look at what it means to be a single, middle-aged, gay man. The personal stories of peers and contemporaries will facilitate a dialog into what it means to be alone but not necessarily lonely. Making peace with one's singleness and cultivating resources and support systems which affirm the individual in a state of mindfulness will be a major focus. Pre-registration is required.
Target group: Single gay men, 40+ years of age. $10 per session.
Offered Wednesday evenings 6:30pm-8:00pm from April 3 – June 5, 2013.
