If you or someone you know is in need of legal consultation from an attorney with an understanding of legal issues in the lives of LGBTQ people, we can help. Center on Halsted works with a number of volunteer attorneys to host regular clinics and provide referrals to area attorneys with experience in the LGBTQ community.

Programs and Services

Legal Clinic and Referrals

Center on Halsted's Legal Clinic provides free and confidential information and referrals from local volunteer attorneys and legal organizations. Sessions are 45 minutes in length. Depending on your legal issue, you may be provided with basic information about the issue, possible options and/or referrals to other legal advocacy groups, attorneys that have been assessed for LGBTQ competency or other social service resources.

This service is not for those individuals who are looking for legal representation or who need a specific outcome, but instead for individuals needing more information. Often this is a great first step for individuals to learn more about their rights and options in regards to their concern, and it could also be the link to another legal referral or pro-bono (free) representation.

Legal Seminars

Throughout the year, Center on Halsted works with attorneys, volunteers and other agencies to provide seminars, classroom training and workshops on different legal topics important to the LGBTQ community such as civil union laws, adoption, estate planning and transgender rights. Please check out the calendar for upcoming legal seminars.

If you have an idea for a legal seminar and would like to propose it to the Legal Program team, please feel free to contact us below.

Volunteer Opportunities

If you are a licensed attorney in the Chicago area, are knowledgeable about working with LGBTQ individuals and want to help advance the LGBTQ community as a volunteer attorney, please email with your contact information and a brief statement about how you would like to serve with Center on Halsted. You will then be sent a brief application and a request for 3 letters of recommendation that reflect your knowledge, experience, and/or ability to work with LGBTQ clients.

If you are a licensed, practicing attorney and would like to be listed in our database for LGBTQ competent referrals, please follow the same procedures outlined above for volunteer attorneys.
