Doubtless the leading non-binary photographer in the world today, Del LaGrace Volcano has created images that defy gender norms and skewer sexual conventions for decades. Volcano is at once both a photographer and often, a photographic subject, examining their shifting embodiments in an entirely characteristic refusal of polarity in favor of "both/and." Volcano's art is a self-conscious provocation against familiar binary gender norms, exploring gender-queer, trans and intersex identifications. Their celebrated work was a stand-out in the exhibition About Face: Stonewall, Revolt and New Queer Art at the Wrightwood 659 Gallery, where it was lauded in the New York Times. For this exhibition, Volcano printed the largest photographic images they've ever made, images of striking impact, clarity and beauty. Now Volcano has agreed to make these photos, the very ones shown in the exhibition, available to bidders as a fundraiser for LGBTQ community Centers.

As Volcano has no US dealer, these images are available only through this benefit auction. After an open bidding process of three weeks, the images will be sold to the highest bidder. This may be your only opportunity to acquire a unique Del LaGrace Volcano photograph, for, originally made only in tiny editions, they will not be sold at this scale again. While Volcano lives in Sweden and is represented in Europe's leading museums, they were actually born intersex in California, expatriating during the Reagan Administration. Volcano's lush photography pushes hard against the borders of what we think we know about gender, but also about race, sexuality, beauty, and most other binary standards that we assume we know on sight. As Volcano famously said, "I prefer my gender ambiguity to be ambiguous."
